World tiger day aims to acknowledge the biggest of the world’s big cats, although their true nature & behavior doesn’t stray too far from our feline companions at home.  Tigers are affectionately known as “the ghosts of the forest.” Although there were originally 8 tiger subspecies, poaching, industrialization, habitat loss and other invasive human activities, like ‘cub-petting,’ have impacted tiger species throughout the years. To date, there are 5 living subspecies of tigers:  Bengal tiger, Sumatran tiger, South China tiger, Indochinese tiger, and Siberian tiger. Sadly, the Bali, Caspian, and Javan tigers have all gone extinct.

World tiger day is an opportunity for tiger lovers all over the planet to push for the need for conservation. Tigers are on the brink of extinction, with only an estimated 3,900 left in the wild.  They are relentlessly poached and killed for their skins and their bones to be used in asian remedies.

Our “world tiger day” candle transports you deep into Bhutan, where the fierce tigress, easily recognized by her dark stripes adorning a reddish-orange coat, seeks solitary refuge under the camouflage of the deep, dense rainforest. Mostly nocturnal, the tiger cannot resist the cool refreshment of the nearby water. She emerges from a midnight swim and shakes her soaking-wet coat dry.  She lazily yawns and lets out a terrific roar heard over 2 miles away, and she waits for a reply from her fellow jungle inhabitants.  As the sun begins to rise, she then retreats to her den to check on her 3 young cubs, and settle in for a daytime catnap.
